The Impact of Sustainability Governance Indicators on Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract/Description

This paper aims to examine the impact of sustainability governance on the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the country level. Existing research, while acknowledging the role of effective governance in the achievement of SDGs, remained largely focused on general aspects of good governance (using Worldwide Governance Indicators from the World Bank). This paper posits that Sustainability Governance Indicators (SGI) are more relevant than WGIs and should be explored further in terms of their relationship with SDGs. Data was collected from the Sustainable Governance Indicators (SGIs) database and the Global SDG Indicators database related to 40 OECD and EU countries. Using two different regression models, this paper tests the influence of different dimensions of sustainability governance (Democracy, Policy performance, and Governance) as well as individual indicators within the three dimensions (such as economic policies, social policies, and environmental policies), on SDGs achievement at the national level. Overall, SGIs have a positive impact on the achievement of SDGs. However, out of the three dimensions of sustainability governance, policy performance and governance have a positive impact on SDGs while the quality of democracy has a negative and insignificant relationship with SDGs. This paper contributes to the literature and has practical significance in highlighting the most relevant aspects of governance for sustainable development.
