Contemporary challenges and issues related to Minimum Wage Laws, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion to Social Justice in the context of Pakistan

Abstract/Description

Purpose – This study aims to assess the key challenges and issues related to minimum wage laws and their relationship with organizational Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policies concerning social justice.

Design/methodology/approach – The research employed with Nvivo-12 qualitative data analysis of Honorable Court Judgments reflects challenges related to labour court and minimum wages to extract thematic issues of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and inequity of social justice.

Findings – The research found significant discrepancies between minimum wages and living wages in the labour force of Pakistan, struggling with justice from the labour population and a severe need to reframe diversity, equity and inclusion policy, especially gender discrimination, ageing and disabilities of the labour force for sleek of social justice.

Research limitations/implications – A relatively small sample size of judgment employees was used, which may suggest the need for diverse and more representative samples of the actual labour force and industries. The paper is based on secondary data from honourable courts judgment from Pakistan about minimum wages and labour force – other economic sectors and Asian countries may offer different results.

Practical implications – The paper identifies the need for incorporating labour policy practices and culture at the workplace to encourage positive implementation and acceptable behaviour in employers, which will increase industrial relations and positively grow the firm.

Originality/value – This paper reported the initial empirical findings of the Honorable Court judgment of challenges and issues of minimum wages and labour force challenges in Pakistan and its related industrial practices.
