Technology as an enabler of Sustainability: A closer look at Artistic Milliners’ Textile Supply Chain in Pakistan

Abstract/Description

Sustainability is no more a ‘good-to-have’, it is imperative for businesses to weave it into the very fabric of organizations and industries for better quality, more authentic products, preserving our environment and reducing our footprint for a better future. Technology, in its multi-faceted and fast-evolving forms has been critical in making this transition to creating more responsible and sustainable supply chains. With ever more evident climate-change and its devastating impacts globally, the need to disrupt existing methodologies, lack-luster models and inefficiencies in systems is the need of the hour. With precision agriculture, smart-farming, and various new technologies the agricultural sector has seen a third wave of revolution and third-world countries with agriculture-based economies like Pakistan are following suit. Ensuring that there is traceability in supply chains is critical since ensuring reliable product is of key importance. Block-chain enabled traceability offer immutable data with a decentralized system which eliminates the need for a central authority or third party, which in turn is key for creating trust between multiple stakeholders. Within the textile supply chain, knowledge sharing is essential to bring all partners, including the farmers and cotton-picker up to date with the latest trends, best farm management practices and the latest technology available, to attempt to be increasingly sustainable.
