Treasury Single Account & its effect on corruption, transparency & accountability, financial discipline, banking sector & economic development

Abstract/Description

Purpose- Currently in Pakistan, Government operate multiple treasury accounts with different commercial banks, therefore consolidated financial information is not available with government. Due to lack of consolidated information government engages in unnecessary borrowing and it is difficult to trace fraudulent activities. Treasury Single Account (TSA) is being adopted world over to curb these issues. The current study examined the possible impact of Treasury Single Account on corruption, transparency & accountability, financial discipline, banking sector performance, and economic development.

Study design/methodology/approach- The research design is descriptive and cross-sectional data has been collected from 100 respondents, mainly treasury officers/managers at different banks, through convenience sampling technique. Structured questionnaires have been used to collect primary data.

Findings- We found that TSA has significant positive impact on reducing level of corruption, promoting transparency and accountability, enhancing financial discipline, reducing banking deposits and banking profits, and supporting economic development.

Originality/value- Study findings have significant implications for governments and policymakers to understand the benefits TSA may bring to Pakistan's economy and its effect on other factors. This study will also help banks to understand the impact of TSA on their deposits.
