Sustainability assessment of Indonesian Islamic banks
Abstract/Description
Sustainability is an inherently complex and multi-dimensional concept. It asks for a simultaneous balance between its environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The awareness and demand for sustainable development are getting more assertive on the one hand, and on the other, measuring sustainability is a complex undertaking. The study has examined the current state of sustainability practices in Indonesian Islamic banks (IBs). The sustainability assessment of Indonesian IBs over the ten-year period (2010-2019) revealed an increased reporting trend on the sustainability dimensions. Indonesian IBs report almost equally on all sustainability dimensions and have comprehensively documented environmental and social dimensions. The considerable improvement by Indonesian IBs can be attributed to the 2014 roadmap for sustainable finance and regulations issued by OJK. Islamic banks in Indonesia have shown commitment towards sustainability implementation through increased reporting on sustainability and many aspects of operations.
