Developing the business incubation process frameworks using systematic literature review
Abstract/Description
Business Incubation Process is considered as the set of value added services that are provided by the incubator to the start-up incubatee firms with the objective of supporting these start-ups in their initial phase. Many review articles have accumulated the knowledge around the area of business incubation from various perspectives but with more than 10,000 business incubators around the world and 25 years of research on business incubation process, it is important to understand that how do these business incubators operate and add value to the incubatee start-ups. Against this background, this study provides the holistic view of the research body on business incubation process through bibliometric analysis, followed by Context (C), Intervention (I), Mechanism (M), Outcome (O) analysis of 73 articles. The analysis proposes frameworks for four mechanisms that drive the incubation process by different incubator types in their specific contexts, to design the set of interventions, and achieve intended outcomes. These four mechanisms identified include: innovation support mechanism; societal impact creation mechanism; entrepreneurial culture development mechanism; and commercialization and growth mechanism. These incubation mechanism frameworks will help efficiently manage business incubators in the disruptive time of Covid-19 and beyond.
