Abstract

This thesis presents a critical analysis of the ghazals of Afzal Ahmed Syed through the theoretical lenses of Muhammad Hasan Askari and Shamsur Rahman Faruqi. It situates Syed's poetry within the broader classical Urdu poetic tradition, engaging deeply with concepts such as ma‘ni āfarīnī (meaning-making), iḥām (ambiguity), and munāsabat (semantic relations). The study investigates how Syed, while writing in a contemporary age, reclaims and revitalizes classical forms and tropes of the ghazal, thereby negotiating a tension between modernist aesthetics and traditional structures. The thesis also reflects on Askari's notion of civilizational continuity and Faruqi's articulation of intrinsic poetic devices, ultimately evaluating Afzal Ahmed Syed’s contribution as a modern yet classically rooted poet.
