Abstract
The rapid growth of e-commerce has intensified the complexity of procurement and supply chain management, driving interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve operational efficiency and decision-making. Despite this growing attention, current research lacks an integrated perspective on AI in procurement, as most studies concentrate on upstream forecasting or downstream logistics, with limited focus on how AI enables core procurement decisions such as contract negotiation or dynamic supplier switching during disruptions. Additionally, there is a lack of unified theoretical models that capture AI’s transformative role in backend functions like sourcing, supplier management, and workflow automation. This thesis examines AI integration in e-commerce procurement by synthesizing insights from 45 academic studies. Rather than viewing AI as a standalone tool, it is framed as a driver of organizational transformation. Using a systematic literature review and thematic analysis Braun and Clarke’s study explores readiness, phased implementation, and ethical considerations shaping adoption. Findings show AI can enhance efficiency, agility, and sustainability, but success depends on leadership support, workforce training, and change management for AI Adoption. The review highlights the need for empirical research and structured frameworks to fully realize “Procurement 4.0” in the e-commerce era.
