Abstract
Purpose: Although workplace friendships have been found to promote employee performance, happiness, and overall well-being, we do not know about their effect on employees thriving at work. Moreover, little is known about the boundary conditions that may affect workplace friendships and their outcomes. To fill this void, this study investigates the relationship between workplace friendships and employees thriving at work with a moderating role of interpersonal conflict at work.
Methodology: An experimental research design with 2x2 factorial design was adopted. Data were collected from 138 white-collar employees from Pakistan using Google Forms.
Findings: According to this study's findings, workplace friendships positively influence employees' thriving at work. Interestingly, the presence of interpersonal conflict did not significantly diminish this effect, highlighting the resilience of workplace friendships in mitigating the negative impact of interpersonal conflict.
Originality/Value – This is the first study to test the causal association between workplace friendships and employee thriving at work. Moreover, examining the moderating role of interpersonal conflict adds to limited research on the boundary conditions of workplace friendship and its outcomes.
