Abstract

This purpose of this survey is to study the use of query expansion to remove ambiguity of query terms. Both ontological query expansion and non-ontological query expansion are considered to analyse how system disambiguate the query terms to provide better search result. The result showed that search result with query expansion have better recall and precision than keyword-based information retrieval system. The result found showed that ontological query expansion performs best with less query terms whereas for probabilistic model the result varies according to the probability expansion technique used.
