Abstract

This paper provides a neoclassical realist analysis of Pakistan's strategic options amid the intensifying Sino-American rivalry. It examines how this rivalry reshapes the geopolitical landscape in which Pakistan operates, compelling it to navigate a restrictive environment to safeguard its national interests. The paper employs qualitative analysis, with primary sources including official documents and news articles, to articulate Pakistan's precarious position between two competing superpowers. Key findings suggest that while traditional alliances with the United States have offered security benefits in the short term, the growing partnership with China is of more strategic significance given the alignment of long-term strategic goals. The analysis argues that hedging—maintaining engagement with both China and the United States—offers Pakistan the most pragmatic approach to maintain sovereignty and leverage in a multipolar world order.
