Abstract
Pakistan has put a lot of money into the systems needed for digital payments, but payments made directly from a person to a merchant (P2M) have barely grown. The wider retail payment sector is changing fast, yet the part that covers everyday shop purchases is still weak. This Experiential Learning Project was carried out with Habib Bank Limited (HBL) and supervised by professionals from HBL and the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi. It sets out to understand what is holding merchant payments back in Pakistan, what could move them forward, and where HBL fits into the picture. To get there, the study looks at Pakistan's payment system from three angles: the rules set by regulators, the infrastructure on the ground, and the habits of ordinary customers and merchants. Three areas get the most attention. One is how much P2M payments are actually used and how far they could still grow. Then, there is the rivalry between commercial banks and fintechs for customers of digital wallets. The last case study would be QR code payments and especially how much further they can develop before hitting bottlenecks. The sources used are secondary sources, including SBP publications, studies, and industry figures.
