SBS Thought Leadership Area Justification

Our project involved a rigorous cycle of strategic planning and execution to address the waste management challenges at Mondelez Pakistan: Strategic Planning: We began by conducting a gap analysis of the existing environmental data (SIA) against the global GRI 306 standard. This phase was critical for identifying the inconsistencies in how waste was being categorized and reported across the Confy and Tang plants. We then developed a project roadmap to unify these disparate data streams into a single, cohesive dashboard Execution: We executed the plan by cleaning and standardizing six years of historical data (2020–2025). We implemented a 'mass balance' approach to verify the integrity of the figures and translated these into eight actionable waste indicators. Decision-Making & Future Roadmap: The project concluded with the development of a 2030 projection model. By using historical performance trends and agreed-upon improvement assumptions, we provided the company with a strategic tool to forecast future waste outputs based on production growth. This moves the organization from a reactive, retrospective reporting mode to a proactive, strategic planning capability for sustainable manufacturing.

Our project is directly aligned with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), specifically targeting the reduction of food waste and the promotion of sustainable industrial practices. Key aspects of our project that support this goal include: Waste Intensity Reduction: We established a robust measurement framework that tracked food waste intensity across two manufacturing plants. Our analysis revealed a significant reduction in waste intensity from 16.07\text{ kg/MT} to 4.88\text{ kg/MT} over the 2022–2025 period. Standardized Reporting: By aligning internal data collection with the GRI 306 waste standard, we enabled the company to move toward more credible and transparent reporting on waste diversion and reduction. Resource Efficiency: Our 2030 projection model helps the company map out how to achieve absolute food waste reductions despite projected production growth, directly contributing to the efficient management of natural resources and the minimization of waste generation in the manufacturing lifecycle.

Abstract

This Experiential Learning Project was conducted with Mondelez Pakistan Limited, the local subsidiary of one of the world's biggest snacking companies. There are two factories in Karachi: a Chocolate Factory called “Confy” and a Powdered beverage factory called “Tang”. Our job was to create one single accurate picture of waste tonnages, how they are managed and where they are going to be by 2030 at these two plants. Prior to this project, the company maintained monthly records of waste that were not centralized and did not contain a consistent set of indicators, nor was there a means to determine if performance was improving or declining.

The data was analyzed using Mondelez Pakistan's internal simple indicator analysis (SIA) data from January 2020 to December 2025. We used those records to develop eight waste indicators, which we mapped against the GRI 306 waste standard, checked against a plant-level mass balance, and took forward to 2030 based on our mutual agreement with the company's sustainability team on assumptions.

The headlines are mixed – good in some areas, worrying in others. The intensity of food waste decreased from 16.07 kg/ton of production in 2022 to 4.88 kg/ton in 2025, a 70% reduction, primarily from the chocolate plant. The diversion rate has been consistent at 97% in all the 6 years, thus ensuring that the Karachi plants are well within the Mondelez's global benchmark range of 95-98%. In 2025, there was an increase in inorganic waste, but the majority of this was due to the commencement of a stream that had previously not been included in the waste stream. All eight indicators are currently on track to achieve their 2030 targets, and under the same assumptions, absolute food waste can be reduced by approximately a third, while production increases by almost the same amount.

We recommend the following actions to make numbers more credible and performance more durable: Unclassified waste stream is properly characterized, more waste is pushed down at Confy, informal animal feed arrangements are taken on a formal footing, the model is put into the reporting of the company on an annual basis, and water and other indicators are taken on a formal footing in the future. The project's focus is on SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and it is also relevant to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
