Abstract
This Experiential Learning Project (ELP) is being conducted with Engro Eximp FZE, a trading company in the commodities market that is part of Engro Corporation located in Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), Dubai, UAE. This ELP is designed to provide Engro Corporation with an analysis and trading strategy that can be implemented over the next several years to help them move from a sourcing company to a global commodity trading house. We are pursuing four work streams: a market study for fertilizer in the GCC and import markets in South Asia; a market study for petrochemicals and polymers in this same region; a geopolitical risk assessment of three overlapping shocks that have adversely affected global commodities trade since 2022; and a competitive landscape and risk register analysis for Engro Eximp's sector. The research employs a robust mixed-methods approach combining secondary data from reliable international data sources, including the World Bank, International Fertilizer Association (IFA), FAO, NFDC Pakistan, BCG, Oliver Wyman, Index Box, ITP World, ChemAnalyst, ICIS, and commodity intelligence providers, with quantitative financial modeling such as price benchmarks, supply/demand gap, sensitivity analysis, and corporate structure options valuation. The research represents the state of the market as of the first quarter of 2026, when the Strait of Hormuz was open for exports following US-Israel military strikes on Iran in late February 2026. According to the fertilizer market analysis, the global fertilizer market is valued at USD 207–230 billion and growing at 3 4% CAGR, with annual trading opportunities associated with Pakistan's urea import tenders (e.g., 150 000–400,000 MT of DAP per season), India shifting its DAP imports from China to the GCC (Maden, 3.1 MT/year), and Bangladesh's growing imports across all nutrients. Globally, the industry is estimated to generate USD 645–701 billion in petrochemicals. These markets include Pakistan’s import market of 557,000 MT polypropylene; India’s anti-dumping-protected PVC market following its October 2024 duties on seven key low-cost countries; Bangladesh’s MEG demand for its USD 47 billion garment industry via EQUATE Group Kuwait; and specialty certified polymers with 10–20% premiums over Chinese domestic counterparts. The geopolitical risk analysis presents three compounding shocks—the Ukraine war, the Red Sea crisis and the active Hormuz closure—and their cumulative impact on fertilizer prices (urea up 50% to USD 700/MT), polymer supply chains (85% of Middle East PE exports blocked), insurance costs (10-25x base), and trade finance. The competitive analysis positions Engro Eximp as a Tier 4 niche corridor trader with rare and unique advantages (Engro Group brand equity in Pakistan, JAFZA proximity to GCC producers, and structured trade finance) while also considering a ten year timeframe moving it away from captive sourcing into a diversified, multi-corridor commodity trading house with institutional investment grade credentials. Keywords: Commodity Trading, Fertilizer Supply Chains, Petrochemicals, Geopolitical Risk, Trade Finance, South Asia Logistics, Risk Mitigation, Strait of Hormuz.
