SBS Thought Leadership Area Justification

Our project was closely aligned with the finance department of the organisation, and from the very beginning, we worked in continuous collaboration with the department to understand its requirements, challenges, and strategic objectives. The primary objective of the project was to develop a standardised royalty benchmarking model that would enhance transparency, consistency, and fairness in royalty-related decisions across the organisation. Such a model not only benefits the institution by establishing clear and objective evaluation criteria but also strengthens trust among authors by ensuring that royalty determinations are based on measurable and transparent factors.

Throughout our engagement, the finance department emphasised the importance of adopting a structured and data-driven approach to royalty assessment. Existing decision-making processes relied heavily on manual analysis and professional judgement, which could be time-consuming and susceptible to inconsistencies. To address these concerns, the department sought a benchmarking framework that could support more informed investment and publishing decisions while minimising human error and reducing administrative effort.

The resulting model was designed to provide a reliable, evidence-based mechanism for evaluating royalty rates by incorporating relevant performance indicators and industry benchmarks. By standardizing the evaluation process, the model enables the organization to make more consistent financial decisions, improve operational efficiency, strengthen accountability, and ensure that future royalty negotiations and investments are supported by objective data rather than subjective assessments. Ultimately, the project contributes to better financial governance and supports the organization's long-term strategic goals by providing a scalable and transparent decision-making tool.

Our project contributes to Quality Education by supporting the development of a more transparent, efficient, and sustainable educational publishing ecosystem. Since educational institutions and publishers play a crucial role in producing learning materials, improving the financial and operational processes behind educational publishing directly impacts the quality and accessibility of educational resources.

By creating a standardized royalty benchmarking model, the project helps ensure that authors are compensated through a fair, consistent, and data-driven process. Fair compensation encourages experienced educators, researchers, and subject experts to continue producing high-quality textbooks and academic content. This, in turn, enhances the availability of reliable and well-developed educational materials for students and institutions.

In addition, the model enables the Finance Department to make better-informed investment decisions regarding educational publications. By reducing reliance on subjective judgment and minimizing human error, the organization can allocate resources more effectively toward projects that have the greatest educational value and impact. Improved financial governance also supports the long-term sustainability of educational publishing initiatives

Abstract

The work of authors forms the basis of the publishing industry and serves as a vital pillar of intellectual debate and national literacy in Pakistan. Unfortunately, there are no set mainstream royalty standards in Pakistan, which leads to unequal remuneration practices that lower the calibre of work done. In order to ensure that the benefits persist for all stakeholders, especially the authors. It is crucial to develop a data-driven understanding of current royalty structures, percentage norms, and best practices in light of the rising demand for high-quality educational materials.
