Abstract

The ICD code or the International Classification of Diseases Code is a standardized system under use by physicians, doctors and other health care providers to help them code and classify the symptoms, diagnoses and other procedures carried out during consultation of a patient. The ICD Code is also used in later stages that may include insurance claim, billing or post-consultation analytical use-cases.

Manual ICD coding is time consuming and vulnerable to errors, the proposed project desires to replace this manual code assignment process with an automatic process to minimize the human error and human dependency.

We intent to automate the process of ICD Code assignment and try to come up with a better automatic code assignment process by comparing different machine learning algorithms traditional and based on machine learning, first we try to get an initial accuracy on all models then apply different accuracy increasing techniques that are widely used in Natural Language Processing, Finally we will apply Active Learning to increase accuracy of the processes to another extent.
