Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to build empirically based taxonomies to explore underlying patterns in the manufacturing firms based on the level of adoption of supply chain resilience capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach: This study used a survey approach with a sample of 196 manufacturing companies. The data was analysed using the hierarchical cluster analysis technique and Welch ANOVA.

Findings: Firms can be divided and labelled into four groups based on their resilience levels: primitive, precautious, progressive, and prepared. Moreover, the transition of firms from cluster 1 to cluster 2 is more challenging than moving up to later stages.

Research limitations/implications: The explanation and description of each cluster were limited because the study was based on a cross-sectional survey that did not include qualitative exploration approaches such as semi-structured interviews.

Practical implications: It gives a holistic picture to managers by helping them understand where they stand in the resilience spectrum and thus take appropriate actions to move from a lower supply chain resilience level to a higher one.

Originality/value: This is one of the first studies which has identified a spectrum of supply chain resilience stages with empirical evidence.
