Abstract / Description

The role of fiscal policy in raising resources for Pakistan's development during the eighties is analyzed in this paper in the setting of the historical trends. The two main indicators of development used are: (a) economic growth; and (b) poverty alleviation, income distribution and provision of basic needs. The paper is divided into four parts. The first part presents an overall view of the structure of public finances. The second part evaluates the main characteristics of tax system and the contribution of fiscal policy towards economic growth in Pakistan.
