Abstract / Description

The paper is divided into four parts. The first part presents an overall view of the structure of public finances. The second part evaluates the contribution of fiscal policy towards economic growth in Pakistan. The third part, which is the main core of this paper, draws upon the empirical evidence regarding the impact of fiscal policy on income distribution, poverty alleviation and basic needs. Finally, we speculate on some of the ingredients of a "desirable" fiscal policy package for the eighties.
