Abstract
This project aims to see the extent of the awareness of mental illnesses and the level of acceptance of these illnesses in the Pakistani media as compared to the western media. In order to make this comparative analysis between these two emerging and vast medias, I chose two types of mental illnesses for this project. One is depression and the other is Schizophrenia. In this paper, the symptoms, treatments and causes have been highlighted. Apart from this two types of media theories have been focused on which are the cultivation analysis theory and media dependency theory. 4 For the comparative analysis, two dramas from the Pakistani media have been chosen and two movies from the western media have been chosen which portray the awareness and acceptance of depression and schizophrenia. the two dramas are ‘Yeh dil Mera’ and “Ranjha Ranjha’ and the two movies are ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and ‘Cake’. After conducting this research, this paper came to a result that the Pakistani media needs to invest and produce more content revolving around mental illnesses and they need to be more direct and vocal about it.
