Abstract
This paper analyses 6 short stories of Ismat Chughtai: Chooi Mooi, Badan ki Khushboo, Lihaaf, Gainda, Do Haath and Bari Sharam ki Baat. Each story is analysed using a Historical Materialist Theoretical Approach with focus on elements that allow for a Marxist reading of the texts. The female characters' agency is discussed in light of circumstances that work toward limiting it. All female characters confront their own distinct 'enemies,' with no singular enemy being blamed for their oppression. Chughtai shows class conflict by depicting the power held by those of the upper class and the heroic women of the lower class.
