Abstract

In today’s world, local languages without institutional status are threatened and many such languages have become extinct. Language loss is not just a loss for the specific community; rather it is a loss of particular worldview, indigenous knowledge and wisdom for the whole of humanity. This study aims to analyze the role of state policies and planning on the preservation and maintenance of local languages of Chitral. Although Chitral’s linguistic diversity has appealed to local, national, and international experts,  there was a gap in literature with regards to the impact of State language policies and planning on the local languages of Chitral and local population’s perception of the same. This research presents an overview of the current role of State language policies and planning on the maintenance and preservation of the local language of Chitral, covering status, Corpus, Acquisition , prestige and revitalization planning. This study applies qualitative research methods backed by fieldwork. Alongside comprehensive policy review of the Pakistani state at Provincial and National level relevant to language policy and planning. Language planning and policy framework has been used to examine the findings. The main findings were: Currently, the state policy and planning completely ignores the thirteen local languages except for Khowar. The current status of other local languages requires active interventions by the state for Status, Corpus, Acquisition, Prestige, and Revitalization planning in order to preserve these local languages effectively.
