Abstract

This thesis explores the various ways in which the Pakistani state, particularly the powerful military, has attempted to use Islam and the reformation of it as a strategic tool for their political motives. My focus will be the tenure of General Musharraf and the steps he undertook in the context of the United States of America’s ‘War on Terror’. I will study and analyze the post-9/11 policies of the US and the impact of those policies on the local politics of Pakistan. I will also analyze similar attempts made in the past by the political and military elite of Pakistan, in order to establish the fact that this strategy of Musharraf – reformation of Islam – is not new to the politics of Pakistan.
