Abstract

This study explores the multi-dimensional marginalization experienced by the fishing communities in Karachi, particularly through examining two fishing villages on the coast of Karachi, namely Mubarak Village and Abdur Rehman Goth. I have been in contact with both the villages since my adolescence due to my passion for fishing and have observed these communities closely. Abdur Rehman Goth is a popular point for fishing while Mubarak Village is revered for its recreational purposes. Drawing from interviews focused on the lived experiences of community members from both the villages, this study aims to show the systemic exclusion they experience through political disengagement and neglect, lack of governance, socio-economic depravation, environmental exploitation, urban expansion, and NGO engagement. Using the frameworks of political ecology and political marginalization, this research explores how state policies which prioritize elite interests lead to environmental exploitation and increase the socio-economic vulnerability of these communities. This study also explores the issues which are experienced by the community and their declining living standards which are showed through the findings of the interviews. Through these insights, this study contributes to broader studies of socioeconomic inequalities of certain communities, and environmental governance in Pakistan.
