Abstract
Although parasocial relationships have been extensively studied in psychology, there is limited research on their psychological and emotional impacts, particularly concerning Bollywood fictional characters from popular movies such as Jab We Met, Kabir Singh, and Vivah, as experienced by young females in Pakistan. This study aims to fill this research gap by exploring how psychosocial development influences the formation and impact of parasocial relationships and whether these relationships affect romantic beliefs.
Parasocial relationships are defined as one-sided, imaginary connections with media personas, where the media figure is unaware of the relationship. Psychosocial development involves the evolution of personality through social and psychological experiences, while romantic beliefs refer to an individual’s expectations in romantic relationships.
Employing a mixed-method approach, this study quantitatively surveys adult females in Karachi, Pakistan (aged 18-25 years), and conducts qualitative semi-structured interviews with 9 females (aged 18–25 years) selected from the survey population. The survey evaluates romantic beliefs, identity formation versus role confusion, intimacy versus isolation, and the presence of parasocial relationships. The interviews further investigate how these relationships impact romantic beliefs, including any changes in romantic expectations and ideas of love, and how psychosocial development influences the formation of parasocial relationships.
The research aims to investigate the development of parasocial romantic relationships with Bollywood fictional characters among young adults (18–25 years old) in Pakistan. It also examines how psychosocial development affects these relationships and assesses their impact on the romantic beliefs of young adults, addressing a significant research gap in the literature.
