Abstract
This paper presents a comparative analysis of two Asian films, Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together (1997) and Kim-Jho Gwangsoo’s Just Friends? (2009), focusing on the visual and narrative practices in the depiction of intimacy. The analysis traces the evolution of representation from tragic to happy endings, exploring how intimacy is portrayed through a multisensorial lens, particularly through the sense of touch. It examines how explicit and realistic intimate interactions are portrayed on-screen and how these moments contribute to the films' narratives of intimacy, as well as the exploration of shame, both within and outside the film’s context. Sound and imagery are also analyzed to explore dichotomies within heteronormative culture, including the presence or absence of intimacy, to understand their thematic impact on the conclusions of both films.
