Abstract

This study examines the relationship between female Pakistani university students' use of Instagram and their body dissatisfaction while taking sociocultural effects and social comparison into account. Social Comparison Theory by Festinger (1954), The Perfectionism Model, Tripartite Influence Model by Thompson et al. (1999), Body Image Social Cultural Model (BISCM), and Cultural Competence Model (CCM) have been employed to better understand these associations. Self-report data was collected from Pakistani university students aged 18-25, with 128 responses from women. For the study’s analysis 127 responses were utilized. Bergen's Social Media Addiction Scale, Fardouly and Vartanian's Social Comparison Scale, and Social Cultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Scale-3 were employed to examine social media addiction, social comparison, and SPSS quantitative analysis examined correlations and mediating factors using regression and hypothesis testing. The findings support that Instagram usage is positively correlated with body dissatisfaction, social comparison, and socio-cultural influences. Overall, the study's findings reject the null hypothesis, although further research is needed on additional body dissatisfaction indicators. These findings illuminate women's internet habits, mental health, and body dissatisfaction, highlighting the need for further research.
