Abstract

This study explores the relationship between Instagram addiction and academic performance in Pakistani university students, considering the mediation of loneliness and self-esteem. Drawing on self-determination theory and Walberg's academic achievement theory, the research seeks to enhance understanding of these relationships. Self-report data was collected from Pakistani university students aged 18 to 24 (young adults), with 101 responses (54 females, 47 males). For the study’s analysis, 87 of the responses were utilized. To measure Instagram addiction, loneliness, and self-esteem; the Instagram addiction scale, UCLA loneliness scale, and Rosenberg self-esteem scale were employed, respectively. Additionally, academic performance was quantified using GPA (grade point average). Quantitative analysis in SPSS involved regression analysis and bootstrapping to examine relationships and mediation. Findings support a significant negative correlation between Instagram addiction and self-esteem, and a significant positive correlation between Instagram addiction and loneliness. However, non-significant correlations challenge the hypotheses of positive and negative relationship between self-esteem and academic performance, and loneliness and academic performance, respectively. Moreover, a non-significant negative correlation between Instagram addiction and academic performance contradicts the hypothesis. Overall, the study's outcomes cannot fully dismiss the null hypothesis, highlighting the need for further investigation. These insights illuminate digital behaviors, emotional well-being, and academic outcomes among students, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive exploration.
