Abstract

Substance abuse produces significant costs for society and the rising rate of substance abuse in Pakistan is a crucial issue to consider. In 2013, around 6.9 million adults were addicted to drugs. The vulnerable population lies in the adolescent age group between the ages of 16-35. Although the rates of drug addicts are rising substantially, the adequate supply of treatment is still unavailable. Similarly, there is not enough data available on the institutes working for the treatment of substance abuse patients. This research focuses on effectiveness of Psychiatric Institutes in treating substance abuse patients in Karachi. Research will be based on two Psychiatric Institutes, Alleviate Addiction Suffering Trust (AAS Trust) and Therapy Works. Nine semi structured interviews were conducted with professionals including Psychologists and Psychiatrists working with substance abuse patients. Data was categorized into different themes. Significant aspects of every theme were analyzed and efficacy of treatment process was evaluated. Secondly, data on success rates, dropout rates and relapse rates were collected from the Psychiatric Institutes to measure the positive outcomes in the treatment of drug addicts. The results showed that substantial opportunities are being provided by psychiatric institutes to ensure proper treatment for substance abuse patients. Major aspects of the treatment process such as group and family counselling, relapse and culture were being catered to. However, major changes have to be brought in in order to provide for individual needs.
