Abstract

The present study investigated two components related to parenting styles, personality characteristics, and birth order in the context of Pakistan. First, the research aimed to explore the relationship between parenting styles and personality characteristics. It looked at whether parenting styles correlated with personality characteristics. The parenting styles included were authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. The personality characteristics were extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. Second, the study focused on understanding the relationship between parenting styles and personality characteristics with birth order. It focused on understanding whether their relationship creates a difference in birth order. The birth order was categorized into firstborn, middle born, and lastborn. A quantitative research method was applied to collect the data. A survey was devised, which combined three questionnaires into a form. It included a demographic questionnaire, a perceived parenting styles questionnaire, and the Big Five Inventory (BFI) questionnaire. A total number of 126 responses were gathered, whose ages ranged from 18 to 40 years. Out of which, only 124 grew up in Pakistan. The data were examined using a bivariate Pearson correlation on the IBM SPSS-23 software. Two hypotheses were formulated. The first hypothesis proposed the existence of a relationship between parenting styles and personality characteristics. The second hypothesis was to understand the relationship between parenting styles and personality characteristics with birth order. The results supported the hypotheses. Further, analytical results were compared with the literature for comprehensive reliability of the research. The present research has proved a positive relationship between specific birth order and personality characteristics in Pakistan.
