Abstract

Climate change due to green house gas emissions have been a major issue for the better part of the last century and the global implications they've had are rather distressing. If immediate actions are not taken its going to create a havoc tomorrow since climate change impacts are manifold ranging from environment to health to economic issue. Higher education institutions like any other entity produce greenhouse gas emissions due to their activities. Therefore in order to curb further climate change higher education institutions around the globe are going green and this inclination is exhibited by the regularly calculating, reducing and publishing their Carbon Footprint which in literal terms means the mass of greenhouse gas produced. In my research I have attempted to calculate the baseline Carbon footprint of IBA for the calendar year 2015 so it can be used as a stepping stone to set targets for the greenhouse gas emission reduction. Using GHG Protocol as the standard for my research, I found the total carbon footprint for IBA for 2015 to be 10,650 Metric Tonnes under Scope 1 and Scope 2. Due to time and resource constraints I excluded the optional indirect emissions from Scope 3 which can be included in subsequent researches. IBA needs to implement a cautious multipronged strategy with equal focus on strategic and operational steps that need to taken by partners at all levels in order to minimize the carbon footprint of the institution so sustainable development can be actively promoted.
