Executive Summary

The key reason behind conducting this particular research study was to measure and analyze the economic, social, administrative and as well as environmental impacts of departmental stores operating in Karachi. The departmental stores and retail shops in Karachi reflects a growth Potential for Pakistan because it provides the growth and development opportunities for the country because of the revenue generated by these stores. There are a total of 15 big departmental stores in Karachi which includes lmtiaz supermarket, Chase Value Centre, Hyperstar (international Chain) and Agha's. Moreover, the revenue of the large departmental stores is estimated to be at 15 to 20 million. The researcher formulated key objectives which were the analysis of the economic impacts of departmental stores on small retail shops and the social, administrative, and environmental impacts caused due to departmental stores. The researcher conducted a mixed research design study in order to gather quantifiable data along with qualitative data. The quantifiable data were gathered from 200 participants belonging to various stakeholders, namely consumers, retailers, and wholesalers etc. The quantitative data was analyzed and evaluated using Microsoft Excel whereas; the qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis technique. As far as economic impacts are concerned, it was analyzed that departmental stores having a significant effect on small retail shops which causes these shops to cut down their cost and sometimes that involves tiring employees. On the other hand, the researcher also analyzed the social, administrative and environmental impacts of departmental stores. Consequently, it was found out that the administrative problem like traffic congestion and environmental issue for instance, noise pollution increases due to opening up of departmental stores.
