million people round the globe suffer from mental, neurological, or psychological problem (WHO), and some of these sufferers are suffering alone and some silently. But beyond this suffering lies the stigma and shame that individuals of our society feels in bring these suffering issues to light adding negligence to care thus increasingly contributing to human misery.
The aim of the study is to determine the mental health seeking behaviors among adolescents and their perceptions of mental health support in secondary schools of Karachi. The survey helps in determining the Attitudes and beliefs towards mental health, in addition, current levels of awareness of mental health promotion is also determined.
According to the report of Highlights of Pakistan Economic Survey 2013, literacy rate of population 10 yrs and above Is 58%, and this Is higher in urban than in rural areas and is also high among men. This also raises the number of issues associated with this younger group of
students. Stigma in association with mental illness continues to persist, although more and more students feel that they can seek help for their personal problems including mental health disturbances. No one, regardless of social status, economic conditions, or educational level is immune to mental illness.
Focus in this survey is on knowledge about mental health problems and seeking behaviors; current level of knowledge among adolescents and teachers and guardians, whether they are able to acknowledge these problems or not and the form of help they prefer when anyone encounter such problem is evaluated.
