Executive Summary
It has been observed that prices of poultry products especially broiler and day old chicks fluctuate rapidly on a daily basis. These price fluctuations have a negative impact on the whole poultry supply chain including the final consumer. Poultry farmers thus are not able to predict their future cash-flows and are unable to make business decisions accordingly. Moreover many small farmers have gone bankrupt because of their inability to sustain volatility in prices. Consumers also find surprising changes in the prices of poultry products when they go out to purchase their grocery.
The purpose of the study was to understand the reasons for price fluctuations in the poultry industry and to subsequently propose recommendations to control the observed phenomena. To accomplish this, in-depth interviews were conducted through structured questionnaire with key stakeholders in the poultry industry across Pakistan. These included representatives from poultry grandparent and parent stock companies, hatcheries broiler farms, feed mills, pharmaceutical companies, dealers, transporters, wholesalers, retailers, institutional customers and final consumers.
