Abstract / Description
Channel polling activity in Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) might result in degrading the network performance if the polling intervals are not efficiently selected. Various synchronous and asynchronous MAC protocols have been proposed in the past with the goal of aligning the polling instants at receivers with the transmission time of sender nodes. This paper aims at studying the influence of asynchronous exponentially generated polling intervals on the performance of MAC protocols in WSNs. The suggested asynchronous polling scheme has been implemented in Tiny-OS for Mica2 platform. Avrora simulator has been used for the performance evaluation of the suggested channel polling scheme, in terms of energy consumption and delay. In order to validate the concept, the proposed scheme has been compared with a state-of-art protocol SCP-MAC. It has been found that the proposed scheme outperforms SCP-MAC mainly due to reducing the contention and synchronization overhead.
