Abstract / Description

This paper attempts to present a preliminary analysis of the performance of some selected public enterprises in Pakistan based on the methodology of Social Profitability pioneered by Prof. L. Jones in his study of Korean public enterprises. Within the limitations of data and with the usual qualifications about the reliability and quality of data comparisons have been made about the performance of the same units before and after nationalisation. The State Bank of Pakistan's Balance Sheet analysis of Joint Stock Companies is the main source of information for the period prior to 1971 while the Annual Reports published by the Board Of Industrial Management for various years supplemented by unpublished results of the Census of Manufacturing Industries forms the basis of the post nationalisation period. For the overview of the public enterprise sector as such the World Bank Report on Public Enterprises for 1976 has been extensively used.
