Abstract / Description

The World Bank has, since 1980, played a major role in diagnosing the economic problems of Africa and has also accelerated the flow of financial resources to Sub-Saharan Africa. The Bank has made consistent efforts to adapt to changing conditions in African countries. As you are all aware, until 1980, lending by the Bank was almost exclusively for financing of specific projects. Structural adjustment and other types of balance of payments support loans are new lending instruments which have only recently assumed a high profile in Bank lending. A growing number of African countries have benefitted from these types of loans. It is estimated that up to December 1986, fifteen African countries had received this new type of lending.
