Abstract / Description

The Long-term projections and the probable outcomes presented in this report are based on a set of critical assumptions. Lest that you may get a feeling of automicity between the past achievements and future paths I wish to caution you that for these outcomes to be realized the external environment, domestic policies and the behaviour of private economic actions have to turn out exactly the way we have sketched out. Of course, there are large country variations in initial conditions, resource endowment and the absorptive capacity to manage risks and shocks. Hong Kong, Singapore and Korea happen to be in different league than Malaysia and Thailand while China, Indonesia and the Philippines are on a different economic plane at this stage of their development. Despite these obvious differences there are similarities and commonalities among these countries and my remarks will essentially focus on bringing these common elements that impinge upon the outcomes we have postulated in this report.
