Abstract / Description

The purpose of this paper is to review the past historical trends and the current situation in regard to the food resources of Pakistan and then present some views regarding the prospects in the immediate future. Food production can be expanded either by increasing the amount of land under cultivation or raising yields on existing farm areas through intensive use of water, fertilizers and other inputs. Thus this paper will attempt to focus largely on the production of major food crops, land availability, water resources and physical inputs like fertilizers. However, it is our contention that institutional arrangements and public policy measures play an equally important role in the efficient and optimum utilization, allocation and augmentation of those resources. Further an evaluation of food resources is to be made necessarily in relation to the population parameter.
