Description
Nadeem Hussain and Qazi Muhammad Zulqurnain Ul Haq argue that Pakistan’s national security depends not only on militarised borders but also on strong socio-economic and political institutions. The Covid-19 pandemic exposed weaknesses in Pakistan’s healthcare, emergency response, and epidemic preparedness, ranking it among the least prepared countries globally. The crisis disrupted food supply chains, strained healthcare facilities, and threatened economic stability, potentially shrinking GDP growth into negative territory. NDMA’s disaster management system lacks a proactive, research-driven approach. The authors stress the need for holistic policies, adherence to international health regulations, robust governance, better resource allocation, strengthened higher education, and secure food supply chains to improve resilience. They urge Pakistan to adopt a societal perspective, integrating health, economic, and institutional strategies to better prepare for future crises.
