A Brief History of Exploration

Article
Description
The article traces the history of oil and gas exploration in Sindh and Pakistan from colonial times to recent years. Early exploration attempts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries yielded little until the discovery of the Sui gas field in 1952. From the 1950s to 1970s, Sindh saw modest discoveries, with significant breakthroughs arriving in the 1980s and 1990s, such as Badin, Qadirpur, Miano, and Zamzama. Sindh became a major contributor to Pakistan’s oil and gas production, but since the mid-2000s, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has overtaken it in oil production. Despite Pakistan’s relatively low success rate in exploration compared to global averages, major recent finds have boosted reserves. Oil consumption trends in Sindh reflect economic shifts, declining share in national use despite absolute increases. Price and income elasticity strongly influence petroleum demand, linking consumption patterns with oil prices and GDP growth.
