Abstract
Japan provides the most spectacular success story in contemporary economic history, being the only country in recent decades to have graduated from the ranks of developing countries into the group of advanced countries. The most interesting period of Japan's history of economic development, which can be of some relevance to Pakistan, is the early phase of 1868-1910 under the Meiji dynasty. This paper analyses the main features of the Japanese economic model during the early period and examines how its lessons can be applied to formulate policies for Pakistan.
