Abstract / Summary
This senior year dissertation focuses on the evolution of soft power in Russian foreign policy, more specifically on how the usage of hard power has been impacted by the growing recourse to soft power. I am interested in assessing how this has affected Russia’s foreign relations with other states, under Vladimir Putin’s leadership. My aim is to investigate how Putin has balanced the use of both hard and soft power to achieve certain foreign policy goals (what some analysts might refer to as smart power), and whether or not he has been successful in achieving those goals. I will use the American understanding of hard power and soft power as defined by Joseph Nye and assess whether or not it applies to the case of Russia. My analysis will focus on how Russian soft power has fared under Putin’s tenure and whether or not Russian understanding and implementation of soft power.
