Abstract

This thesis aims to highlight the impact of climate change on the socio-economic environment of Ghizer in Gilgit Baltistan. Ghizer is nestled between the towering Hindu Kush and Karakorum ranges. The study highlights how recent climatic events like unpredictable rainfall, floods, glacial melt, and rising temperatures affect the livelihood, social fabric, and health of the local community. The research used a mixed-method approach—a blend of in-depth interviews and surveys—to capture the experiences and voices of the vulnerable people, since they are the first to suffer the severe consequences of climate change.

The research reveals that the drastic impact of climate change has altered the agricultural foundations—reducing crop yields like potatoes, wheat; fruit productions including cherries, apples and grapes; loss of livestock like cows, yaks and sheep, and disrupting infrastructure in the region. Due to these calamities the local communities faced physical and mental health issues. The disruption weakens economic stability and leads to social dislocation and forced migration.

The study emphasized proactive policies to sustain the socio-economic structure of Ghizer. By enhancing awareness among the community, developing adaptive strategies, and with climate resilience funding and support we can help to preserve the vibrant culture and secure a sustainable future for the people of Ghizer.
