Abstract

Blockchain, that was originally designed for maintaining financial ledger and now being broadly acknowledged as electronic money with popular stories of Bitcoin and Ethereum, is rapidly evolving into something greater and more useful to the world. In recent years, it has caught the interest of healthcare industry due to its performance, decentralization, transparency, immutability and overall security, that enables it to connect to any medical system thorough APIs. Currently, with all medical systems in place within hospitals, healthcare industry is still suffering from major interoperability and security issues. So, the systems have data now, but, that data is not easily shareable and also not secured. Implementing blockchain in healthcare industry can solve the major interoperability and security problems. A patient and other stakeholders of healthcare industry would be able to share their data with other stakeholders/hospitals in a secure manner without any engagement from third party intermediaries. The implementation of blockchain would be able to build a transparent relation between patient, doctor and hospitals, gaining the maximum efficiency in public and private medical systems, with a very positive impact on healthcare results, fraud occurrence, cost optimization and overall patient satisfaction.

Notes

Healthcare is essential to our lives, but critical flaws affect patients all around the world. These flaws mostly occur due to unavailability of correct data, at the right time. In this research survey we have studied and summarized different uses cases of healthcare industry using blockchain and discussed about the type of data that is present in healthcare industry like, patient’s data, registry data, pharmacy data or insurance data, and how this data can that can be managed and mobilized through blockchain, along with its data security throughout the network. We have also discussed about Interoperability of blockchain among the existing legacy electric health record system with two different models. Still, blockchain is not the end of technology in healthcare and it can be made more powerful and useful while combining with other new technologies such as IOT, Cloud, Augmented Reality and Geospatial technology.
