Robotic process automation: challenges in implementation

Abbas Hussain

Organizations seek to improve their operational effectiveness by introducing Robotic Process Automation (RPA). RPA comprises software bots that can communicate with software systems by imitating user behavior, thus reducing the workload of a human. In practical terms, RPA has already made extensive use of solutions; several vendors offer these technologies. The relative lack of attention to RPA in academic literature to this date, contrasts with this early practical adoption. As a result, RPA does not have the solid theoretical foundation for rational thinking about its application and growth.

In turn, this inhibits initiatives to achieve significant progress in the field. In this article, a structured literature review identifying several contemporary themes and challenges relating to RPA for future research are presented.
