Executive Summary

Composting is a natural process which converts organic material like kitchen waste, animal waste, human waste etc. into a dark colored rich substance called as compost that has a musty odor. In Pakistan, the fertilizer sector has showcased exponential expansion. The agricultural sector contributes mainly up to 24% in the national GDP. Along with considerable production, the government is spending nearly 452 Billion PKR on fertilizer importation every year which poses a serious pressure on the state’s bill of importation.

Karachi is the largest city of Pakistan having population of more than 14 million. The horticultural industry is well existing with the urban forestry and landscape service to the forming operations in suburb of the city. The city has one the largest animal markets which has around 200,000 animal heads. Around 6000 tons of animal waste in generated every day. However, the storage facilities are very less abundant and the animal waste is directly entering into drainage facilities acting as source of pollution. The overall system of animal waste management in the city is very limited and is inefficient to cope up the present and future needs of the city.

By transforming this waste into compost, a potential and profitable enterprise can be created. The opportunity for having such a business appears to be very feasible and profitable. However, several barriers like lack of information, knowledge about advantages and disadvantages for producing and low marketing capacity are in place for the adoption composting by the livestock producers. The horticultural industry in Karachi city was evaluated for its status as a potential market of compost. The focus of the research was to determine and evaluate the status as potential market.
