Technical Papers Parallel Session-VI: Female representation in computer science and information technology
Abstract/Description
Women comprise over 49.19% of the population of Pakistan. The number of women enrolling in Computer Science and Information Technology is 14%. Computer science (CS) and Information Technology (IT) is becoming ever present in the lives of young people, including girls and young women, yet education and employment in technology fields are not attracting women. The main focus of this research study is to find the factors affecting the percentage of females in the field of computer science and information technology specifically in KPK region. The gender imbalance in computer science is no secret. For years researchers and practitioners have worked to increase the representation of women in CS. Exhaustive Literature survey revealed the leading factors affecting the participation of females. Study revealed that females perception of CS and IT is also a key hindrance towards adopting the technological fields as career. The parameters extracted from the literature survey are used to develop questionnaires. Results are analyzed and graphically represented which supports the argument. Conclusion and result discussion provides what could be further done to improve the female representation both on organizational and society levels.
