Power at the margin
Article Type
Article
Description
The article discusses the need for a market-oriented pricing system to optimize the existing power infrastructure in Pakistan. It suggests using dynamic pricing mechanisms, such as a reverse-dutch auction, to utilize underused power capacity, particularly from coal-fired plants. The article also recommends adjusting the Time-of-Use (TOU) tariff to reflect actual peak consumption times, including the addition of an Incremental Daylight TOU tariff for solar energy. The goal is to improve industrial growth by ensuring efficient electricity utilization, lowering circular debt, and benefiting from surplus power capacity without adding new infrastructure costs.
