Abstract

The existence of opulence and poverty in the same day and age requires introspection regarding the role of the economic system in ensuring human dignity. As such, frequent economic crises coupled with the glaring poverty gap has initiated discussion on alternative economic systems, which may provide the solution to the said challenges. An economic system envisaged under the economic principles of Islam presents itself as a probable solution. Besides rule compliance, the salient feature of the Islamic economic system is the right of the less fortunate in the wealth of those who are blessed in this world. The tools that operationalize this principle of social justice are the mandatory and voluntary payments under the Islamic economic system namely, zakat, sadqaat, and ushr. Zakat, due to its socioeconomic significance, has been the most thoroughly researched of these tools. This Paper aims to consolidate existing literature and secondary data on the models of zakat management implemented around the world and draw lessons for a particular country, Pakistan. The said lessons are then made part of the conclusion to sensitize the readers residing in concerned policy quarters regarding the available alternatives.
